Job Description
The job purpose as head of MSSQL & Sybase Engineering & Architecture is to deliver and constantly improve a cost efficient and highly available MSSQL & Sybase platform. Be responsible for Global standards for Swiss Re's businesses, Service Level Agreements, financial targets, IT governance and IT standards.
- Delivery of a stable, highly standardized, flexible, highly optimized, high-available, cost-efficient global MSSQL & Sybase environment (including developer tools and DBA tools), business demand, new technologies to meet the defined key performance indicators and service level agreements
- Act as strong contributor on reduction and optimization of generated operations costs in terms of disk volumes, tape volumes, licenses, servers, labour, manual interventions, failures and develop concepts and solutions to reduce and optimize spending in a pro-active foreseeing manner
- Responsibility and ownership of 3rd level support organisation and processes by offering a high performing and highly reactive organisation to support the operations teams on technical problems. Build and maintain strong, seamless and efficient relationship with the application support and operations teams, continually seek improvements and optimizations
- Holder of the firms key know-how on MSSQL & Sybase and act as central know how centre on all of the strategic, technology, vendor, global standards, security, governance concerns on those platforms and deliver directives to global database and middleware management
- Participate on customer driven projects providing expertise and consulting together with the Application Support team as requested and required. Provide and deliver the technical solutions matching or exceeding the customer demand
- Responsible of budgeting, cost control, license costs and resource planning for the MSSQL & Sybase Engineering & Architecture department. Deliver and monitor this data constantly to Database and Middleware Services management and other Swiss Re internal departments and participate in all planning processes and meetings
- Define, Plan and execute MSSQL & Sybase upgrade projects including all business requirements and agendas
- Maintaining familiarity with emerging technologies, drive research & technology for your platform and propose & implement strategic and future oriented technology for MSSQL & Sybase
Desired Skills & Experience
- Minimum of five years demonstrable experience in a senior role of providing support and administration working with MSSQL & Sybase technology
- Team leadership and team management experience working with intercultural and geographically dispersed team members
- Demonstrable experience of supplier liaison and management, achieving high levels of service and negotiating supporting service levels, within tight cost management guidelines.
- Demonstrable experience with platform version upgrade projects (e.g. ASE Version 12.5 to ASE Version 15.5 of Sybase in large scale installations )
- Excellent English and German communication skills in word and writing.
- An analytical and innovative approach to problem solving.
- Strong commitment to keep or move the MSSQL & Sybase platform architecture to best of breed level. Practical experience of utilising best practice testing techniques for database system changes and implementations.
- Experience in supporting a software development lifecycles and IT project implementation from a database acceptance perspective
- Exposure to risk management and analysis techniques
